Pop Sensation Dave Patten

Pop Sensation Dave Patten
Everything you hear on the singer/songwriter’s self-produced albums – acoustic and electric guitars, piano, drums, bass, synthesized horns and string parts – is Dave Patten. Rarely does a musician have the ability and talent to synchronize each aspect of his tracks to the exact specifications of his creative vision.
Yet Dave’s vocals alone make him a standout. His rock-style voice, combined with hip-hop beats, set him apart from the multitude of like-sounding musicians. Dave’s hit the collective pulse with songs like “Wait Jenny” from his fifth album Boomerang and “How Good ft. Meek Mill” and “Echo” from his sixth and most recent album Exposure.  Reflective, soulful, and powerful, they embody just one side of his artistic expression.
Dave’s music has a wide Internet presence. His YouTube videos garner over 7.0 MILLION page views.  In fact, multi-platinum selling artist Wyclef Jean saw Dave’s adaptation of his song “Sweetest Girl” and invited Dave to open for him at Atlantic City’s House of Blues.

Soul Sensation Dave PattenUrban Steez: Tell everybody your name and what area you represent?

Dave Patten, Philadelphia

Urban Steez: How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music?

Dave Patten: I’ve been in bands since Middle School, but starting taking my solo career seriously when I was a senior in high school. When I started getting a lot of real attention in Philly and online and things started to happen, I took it even more seriously. That was about two years ago. Music has always been a really powerful outlet for me, so I tried writing my own songs and using it as my own emotional outlet. It worked, so I kept doing it haha

Urban Steez: How would you describe your style and why? And what do you feel you can bring to the table as an artist?

Dave Patten: I usually say Pop because it’s tough to really categorize. I work with rappers on occasion, but my music is definitely not hip-hop or anything near rap. I’d say “acoustic rock” is a good way to put it. As an artist I think I bring a different style to the table because I both write and produce my music. So there’s more depth to it than simply singing a hook over a beat. From start to finish I put myself 100% into it. I think that’s what separates myself and my music from most.

Urban Steez: What do you feel has been your greatest experience thus far as a music artist and why?

Dave Patten: Breaking 7 million views on youtube! Haha I’m extremely proud of my productions in both music and film. I direct my own music videos, and to have millions of views on projects that I pretty much make happen single handedly (with the help of my film producer David Ricks) from start to finish (write the song, produce it, think of the video treatment, shoot it and edit it) is something I like to pat myself on the back for. It’s an amazing feeling. Must be close to how it felt to sell millions of albums back when albums sold 10 years ago. The industry right now is ground-up, niche markets. You have to do it yourself if you want to succeed, there are no more fairy godmother multi-million dollar record deals.

Urban Steez: 7 million views!!! That’s kind of a big deal… Good stuff on cutting out the middle man for the most part, it gives you full creative control. What do you feel is the biggest challenge you face being an artist?

Dave Patten: Breaking through the ridiculously over-saturated market. But you have to look at it on the bright side:Integrity and talent is what wins out in the end now, it’s not so much just who-you-know. I take that back, it’s still entirely who you know but things have shifted a bit in the favor of those with talent creating a big buzz on their own, which is nice to see.

Urban Steez: Very true! Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why?

Dave Patten: I’d like to write with Kanye West, and Taylor Swift. Say what you want about Kanye personally, but musically he’s amazing and has been a huge inspiration to me since I started. Taylor Swift is just so a-typical in my opinion, and I really like her songwriting style and lyrics, so I’d love to work with her as well.

Urban Steez: Lol.. Its ironic you mention Kanye West and Taylor Swift in the same sentence, but they are in the cream of the crop when it comes to music. So how do you feel you rank against top music talents today? And why?

Dave Patten: I think musically and talent wise I’m par with almost everyone, I just haven’t had the million dollar marketing push behind my music yet. I don’t want to come off as arrogant, but you have to believe in yourself and your product (music + image) if you want to have even half a shot at making it.

Urban Steez: Most Definitely. What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you?

Dave Patten: We’ve just wrapped two more music videos, so they’ll be released within the next few weeks. “Think!”off of my latest album Exposure, and “Come Over Lover” which is a new unreleased track. I’ll most likely release another album in the fall, and between now and then you can expect at least 4 or 5 more music videos.

Urban Steez: Dope!! I have a good feeling, you will never accept “No” for an answer. Give readers one tip about pursuing their dreams?

Dave Patten: The key to that statement is the word pursue. If you want it, you have to go out and actually make it happen. A lot of people like to sit around and talk about it more than they do actually make moves. Nothing happens overnight, and shortcuts are rarely worth it in the long run haha

Urban Steez: Well Said. So what do you want to accomplish as an overall artist?

Dave Patten: I’d like to be known as a musician, as a songwriter who cares about what he’s writing and what he’s singing about. Of course selling tons of albums and being known nationally and internationally is on the check list too.

Urban Steez: Who and what are your influences?

Dave Patten: Kanye West is one of my biggest, as well as Ben Folds Five and Led Zeppelin. I pull from a range of music.

Urban Steez: What do you think of the Pop/ music world right now?

Dave Patten: Ehh, to be honest I think it’s pretty embarrassing, especially to actual musicians of the world. I guess to go along with the statement “don’t hate the player hate the game” I can’t really get mad at Justin Beiber, but I can certainly get annoyed with the labels who are pushing money into him. At the end of the day though, this is a business, and Beiber’s business model works. I just hope to bring a little more “music” back into the music industry with my own business plan. For the record, Lady Gaga is also an embarrassment.

Urban Steez: Lol I like you!! You couldn’t have said it any better, “don’t hate the player hate the game”.. What music do you have playing in your sound system right now?

Dave Patten: I like Big Sean, and like I said I always have Kanye and Taylor on deck lol but the most played album on my iPod is definitely Whatever and Ever Amen, Ben Folds Five

Urban Steez: Who is your celebrity crush?

Dave Patten: Taylor Swift on the music side, Keira Knightley/Evangaline Lilly on the film side

Urban Steez: I should have known Taylor Swift was at the top of your list. How can business heads and fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, number, etc.)?
